WV Route 66

According to the US National Parks System, US Department of the Interior, “US Highway 66, popularly known as “Route 66,” is significant as the nation’s first all-weather highway. The often-romanticized highway represents an outstanding example of the transition from dirt track to superhighway.”  It is a road through “small town USA.” Although not geographically a…

Where Good Ideas Come From

An Assignment Q&A.  Yes, I would love to be more creative!  It’s very fun to be creative.   I would like to be more creative in how I market the booth at Down Home Creations.  I’m going to do a flyer with a coupon and pass it to everyone I know.  I think it will help…

The Blessing Box Experience

In my time here in Harrison, the “Blessing Box” at the Library has given me far more than I have given to others through that blue cabinet. “The Blessing Box (nationally) is a faith based nonprofit service organization that will inspire, nurture, and empower the human spirit by providing social services, charitable assistance and emotional/spiritual…

Crayons were perhaps my first tool of creativity.
In West Virginia, we have our own Rt. 66 and it is historic and beautiful!
A unique way to say, “I love you!”

Perfect Wives Royal Society

My parents were married 63 years until my father passed away.  My mother is 98 and is a strong-willed woman.  I feel my dad spoiled my mom with love and affection.  I feel that is one of the reasons she has survived this long.

My mom has lived a life full of love.  She did not HAVE to work; she chose to work and only after we were in Junior High School.  My dad TOLD her he loved her.  My dad SHOWED her he loved her.  My parents were verbally (words of encouragement and endearment) and physically (hugs and kisses) supportive of each other.  They shared their feelings of love for each other.

One day a few years ago my mom told me, “Your dad still tells me “I love you” every single day.”  Puzzled, I only nodded.  Then she told me about the “I love you” sticker on the utensil holder in the drawer in the kitchen.  I went and looked. There it was.  A sticker that said the words and had a big red heart on it.  It has become a symbol to me of mom and dad’s love for each other and for me and my brothers.

My dad constantly told my mom those three little words, “I love you.” Dad respected Mom and her opinion.  They made decisions together.

The joint decision-making came from early on.  I recently found a letter that my dad had written my mom.  It is dated April 18, 1946.  It reads, “Ginnie – I want you to always advise me & tell me what you think is best & express your opinion on any subject that should arise. You know that if you marry me (I’m bein’ optimistic again) these decisions will affect you directly. – See?”

I also recently found a different kind of greeting card, but it expressed the love my dad had for my mom in a cute way.  It is an “Anniversary Citation” to the “Royal Society of Perfect Wives”.  I have re-created it in a certificate on a program that I use for Social Media Marketing.

I added some things that the certification didn’t say, but that I witnessed through the years.  My dad was all about being supportive and encouraging.  Each of my parents expressed their love, they communicated, and they were each other’s best friend.   They did most things together, but they also did things apart.  They were respectful to each other.  They showed an interest in each other’s interests. They gave each other space.  My mom’s space was in the attic; her painting studio and my dad’s was his “big chair” in the family room downstairs, watching sports.  And best of all, my parents listened to each other.

I hope some men can use this Special Citation to tell their wives all the positive things about their relationship.  I wish that someone would use this as a way to make goals of the certification specifics like BEING each other’s best friends and showing an interest in each other’s interests.  Or perhaps for any one of us today to look back at our own parents with love and affection.  To give credit to love we saw growing up and show love in the future.

Go ahead, say the three little words to someone today.
